A recent stilt student, grinning from ear to ear, exclaimed, “Stilt walking is the healthiest and safest way to get high!”
Stilt walking is much easier than it looks. I find it’s great to be an old guy doing something that looks as if it requires phenomenal skill, impeccable balance and astounding daring! Only those who’ve already tried stilt walking really knows the truth, that stilt walking quickly becomes intuitive, and is not such an impossible gravity defying feat! Stilt walking really requires nothing more than normal physical prowess, a dose of confidence and a one hour lesson with a master stilt walker.
Most new stilt walkers learn to stilt walk unassisted within the first half hour. The record stands at 6 seconds, held for three years now by an otherwise very normal but brave middle aged woman whom no one would ever have suspected was going to be able to walk on stilts, or want to.
I’ve taught folks from 10 – 63 to stilt walk. As an experienced school teacher and a stilt dance master, stilt students benefit from the fine tuned stilt walking lesson I have developed over the years. So far no stilt student has ever left a stilt lesson without at least being able to stilt walk unassisted. Most come back for more lessons or continue on their own…. a few even graduate to stilt dancing lessons then eventually take on roles performing with the Mortal Beasts & Deities.
Private stilt walking lessons can be a fabulous gift to give yourself and/or loved ones. Stilt lessons are perfect for individuals or a small group. Stilt lessons are a great way to spice up a party into a very memorable experience.
Stilt lessons can be held at the Mortal Beasts & Deities studio in the northwest corner of Connecticut, or at your location provided there is proper terrain available.
Mortal Beasts & Deities will provide the stilts and equipment for your first stilt walking lesson. Instructions for continued independent stilt walking practice will be provided. Since practice makes perfect, plans and a parts list to make your own pair of stilts can be included with your lesson, or you can purchase a pair of professional quality stilts from us.
For Mortal Beasts & Deities stilt lessons you will have to be in reasonably fit condition and be ten years of age or older. You will have to bring a favorite pair of old sneakers (no sandals).
Also, you (or your guardian if you’re under 18 years old) must acknowledge that safety is a relative thing, and that while great effort will be expended to make your experience as safe as possible, stilt walking does present a small chance of injury… on a par with running or bike riding. Risk of injury is minimal, but remains your own responsibility.
Our fee structure for stilt lessons hinges upon a number of factors: The nature of your event and the number of students to be taught, as well as possible travel costs to the lesson location. Also impacting the fee will be whether the required spotters are provided by Mortal Beasts & Deities or you provide an adult crew (trained by us) to perform the necessary spotter duties.
